Familiarity with the Android operating system

One of the most basic issues that is very important before preparing an Android device is the initial familiarity with the Android operating system and how to use the devices based on it.  This is especially important if someone who does not have enough information about modern technologies and wants to use these products.  So join us.

As you know, Android is currently the most popular and widely used mobile operating system in the world.  The variety of Android products is much greater and many companies are active in the design and production of these products.  Also, the use of these products has become very popular among Iranians, and statistics show that with the expansion of the use of messaging applications such as Telegram, the older members of the family have also started to use Android devices.  It is true that this issue is commendable, but it will also bring problems!

One of the main problems that arise in this situation is related to the unfamiliarity of the elderly or novices with the Android operating system and how to use Android devices.  Due to their unfamiliarity with modern technologies, these people may have difficulty learning even the most important things for the proper use of Android smart devices.  So, first of all, these types of people should be provided with basic and introductory explanations about the use of Android devices.  In this article, we are going to acquaint these people with the Android operating system and how to use devices based on it.

Familiarity with the Android operating system and a guide to using Android devices

Surely you know that Android is a mobile operating system and makes it possible for you to communicate with the device's hardware platform.  Simply put, Android is the environment you see on your phone, and the features and options in it will probably confuse you a bit.  But do not worry, because using the Android operating system is very simple and this is one of its main features.  Suppose you buy a new Android device.  First you have to take the device out of the box and put your SIM card in its place.  If your smartphone has an integrated body, the back panel is not removable and has a slot around it to connect the SIM card to the device.  But if your device body is not integrated, you can probably access the SIM card slot by removing the back panel of the device.

After installing the SIM card, turn on your smartphone.  This is possible by pressing the Power button on the device.  Smartphones usually contain two or eventually two or three physical buttons.  The long physical button provided is for increasing and decreasing the volume, and the smaller button is undoubtedly for turning the device on and off.  After turning on the device, you will encounter the steps called the first settings.  We recommend that you try to delegate these initial settings to someone else at the outset.  Of course, take a look at these settings and if you understand its content.  Complete this section yourself.  In this section, items such as time, date, device language, and… are specified, which can be changed later.

After making the initial settings, your main interaction with the Android operating system and your Android device will begin.  The first step is to unlock the device screen.  The screen lock of the device is also known as Lock Screen.  How to initially unlock the screens of different Android devices can be different.  For example, on Samsung phones, all you have to do is place your finger on the screen and swipe up slightly.  On our Android device, which uses version 4.4.2 of the Android operating system, the screen is unlocked by holding your finger on the screen and swiping it to the right.

After unlocking the screen of the Android device, you will encounter screens similar to the image below.  Notice the icon we displayed with the arrow.  This icon will take you to the application menu of the device.  This menu is also called Application Drawer.

At the bottom of the screen you will see three symbols.  We start from the left in order.  The curved flash icon you see is an icon that takes you back to the previous section under any circumstances.  For example, suppose that by selecting the icon that we mentioned in the previous section, you will enter the application menu of your device.  Now if you select this curved flash, you will be returned to the home screen of the device.  So the curved flash icon is the "back" icon.

In the middle, there is an icon that looks like a house that will take you back to the home screen of the device under any circumstances.  This icon is known as Home.  The word Home, which we pronounce Home, means house in English.  You will be taken to the home screen of the device under any circumstances and at any time by pressing this button.

But the right button that shows two rectangles in a row is known as the Recent Apps section.  Selecting this option will bring up windows.  Each of these windows is related to a specific program or part of the device that you have just visited.  Using this section, you can easily make instant jumps between different sections and applications of your Android device.

Finally, we must say that the three buttons are physically provided in some Android devices.  For example, Samsung has physically provided these three buttons in some of its products, but brands such as Sony have installed these three icons as touch buttons on the display panel of the device.  Under both of these conditions, the performance of these three buttons is quite similar.

Then enter the device applications menu.  The buttons we mentioned at the beginning of the tutorial, which looked like a circle at the bottom and middle of the image, will take you to this section.  By running the applications menu, you will see a list of applications installed on your device.  Each of the icons and options you see is a program and will provide specific functionality.

One of the options available in the menu of most Android devices is called Help.  This option, if needed and fluent in English, can be an excellent guide for optimal and better use of Android devices.

Read about the phone ROM and its types.

Now that you have launched the applications menu and you will see the various icons presented in this section, place your finger on the screen and swipe left and right.  By doing this, you will see that the device application menu will be redirected to both sides.  Look for an icon that looks like a gear in the list of icons provided.  This icon is known and displayed as Settings and is related to the settings of the Android device.  With this section you can manage all the requirements of the device such as appearance, date, time, language, applications, internet connection and..  When you enter the Settings section of your device, you will encounter various sub-categories, which we will teach you the functionality of some of the options in this section:

Section: Wi-Fi This section is related to connecting to the Wi-Fi Internet network. Section: Bluetooth This section is related to Bluetooth connection settings. Sound section: In this section, the device's audio settings such as alarm sound, its volume and… can be  Display section: In this section, the device screen settings are provided. Apps section: Through this section, you can manage the programs or applications installed on your device. Language and Input section: In this section, you can  Change the language of your device and its virtual keyboard.

We suggest that if you are not very familiar with English, enter the Language and Input section and change the language of your device to Persian in the Language section.  By doing this, all the mentioned options will be displayed in Persian and it will certainly be easier for you to use them.

One of the icons that you can find in the app menu of your device is an icon that looks like a white shopping cart with a horizontal triangle attached to it.  This icon is called Play Store and is the place where the official applications of the Android operating system are reviewed by Google and are made available for download to users of Android devices.

If you want to remove an app or application from your Android device, just place your finger on the icon of the desired application and hold for a while.  In this case, options will appear.  Look for an option called Uninstall.  You may need to touch this option or drag and drop the icon of the program to it.  Then select Yes and the program will be removed from the device.

One of the interesting and main features of Android devices and Android operating system is related to interesting icons known as Widget.  The user can create widgets for some applications installed on your device.  Widgets have an interesting appearance and will make the environment of your Android phone or device more beautiful.  How to add a widget to the pages of your Android device may vary depending on the brand of its manufacturer, but in most Android products you can personalize by holding your finger on the screen or swiping your finger from bottom to top to the settings and personalization section.  Go to the appearance of the device and finally add the widget.

Widgets can be resized, and to resize a widget, simply place your finger on it and hold it down to reveal its dimensional frame.  Now you can change the size and dimensions of the widget to your liking.

One of the most important parts of your device is the notifications or alerts section.  To check this section and get acquainted with it, place your finger on the top of the device screen and swipe down.  You will see the toolbar appear.  This toolbar is actually the notification bar.  This section provides device alert messages as well as shortcuts to access some of the settings of the Android device, which with a little patience and reflection you can learn more about its functions.

If you want to use your device's camera, you must select the camera-shaped icon in the application menu.  This icon is usually attached as a shortcut on the device home screen.  You can manage all the shortcut icons and widgets displayed on the screens of your Android device.  Google Now or Google Now is also one of the interesting features that you can use if you are fluent in English.

To make a call, select Options from the list of icons provided at the bottom of the device screen and next to the Applications menu, which is shown as a phone.  An icon similar to the existing notebook will also take you to the device contacts list.  The icon similar to the envelope is also related to the SMS sending section of the Android device.  Note that the shape and color of these icons may be presented differently on different Android devices.
